Fernando Alonso might race at Daytona 24 Hour in 2018
McLaren could let Fernando Alonso contest the famous Rolex 24 at Daytona endurance sports car race early next year. Fortunately for Alonso, the schedule doesn’t clash with Formula 1, as it takes place in January, a full month before F1 testing begins.
"The race has a great history and it is held in January, when the F1 season has not begun," a report in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo read.
A team owned by McLaren executive Zak Brown, United Autosports, races at Daytona, and it’s speculated that McLaren and Alonso are fine-tuning the 2018 contract to allow him to race at Daytona and possibly other one-off events.
‘’The priority is F1," he said, "with triple crown in the background. But there are many possibilities to do a fantastic 2018.‘’
This one-off event won’t be new for Alonso. He skipped Monaco to contest the Indy 500 this year, and he has also expressed interest in racing at Le Mans 24 Hours in 2018.
McLaren and Toyota have also shown interest in allowing Alonso his first shot at Le Mans 24 Hour as he eyes the triple crown. Referring to Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours.
