Fernando Alonso a better all-round driver than Lewis Hamilton says Jenson Button
Jenson Button was alongside Lewis Hamilton at McLaren from 2010-2012 and later alongside Fernando Alonso at McLaren from 2015-2016.
In his new autobiography, Life to the Limit, the 2009 world champion compares the two and thinks the Spaniard is one of the toughest competitors F1 has ever seen.
"I'd say that over the years Fernando had been one of - if not the - toughest competitors I'd faced, both as a team-mate and a rival at other teams," Button wrote, as per BBC Sport.
Button believes that Lewis was incredibly quick over a single lap, but states that Alonso was the better overall driver through the whole weekend.
"Lewis was unbelievably quick and could pull a lap out of the bag just like that; him and Ayrton Senna were the two quickest guys over one lap, maybe ever.
‘’But Fernando was the more rounded driver. I'd know, even if I out-qualified him, that he'd still be tough to beat in a race.‘’
"He's nice on the outside, really affable and approachable, but beneath that he's a very, very tough competitor who'll do anything to beat you."
Both Button and Alonso struggled during their time as teammates at McLaren due to the unsuccessful partnership with Honda. Alonso still at McLaren is continues to struggle this year with consistent engine failures.
In contrast, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton currently leads the championship by 59 points from second place Sebastian Vettel.
